While a farmer tends his field of wheat, six hungry crows watch and wait in a nearby tree. When the wheat ripens, the farmer builds a scarecrow to frighten them off, but these ingenious crows are not so easily scared. Bringing this original fable to life with brilliant collages, Leo Lionni deftly draws parallels between animal and human behavior that children can readily appreciate. And once again he shows us that compromise can work magic.

From Publishers Weekly
A war of scarecrows begins when a farmer tries to banish six crows from his wheatfield. He creates a horned, menacing figure; the crows fight back by building a giant, ugly bird to hover above the fields like a shadow. The owl intervenes and convinces both sides to talk peace. This moral tale eloquently depicts the pointlessness and futility of the ancient war of fear. As always, Lionni's characteristic primitive art and abstract forms appeal both to the naive perceptions of children and the universal sensitivity of all readers. Ages 3-7.

PreS-Gr 2 Lionni's story about a farmer facing marauding crows teaches a lesson about making peace in the midst of escalating conflict. The farmer is enraged by six noisy crows who keep eating the wheat in his field , and he builds a scarecrow to frighten them off. The crows are disturbed, but not willing to give up, so they design a kite to scare off the monster. The farmer then builds a bigger and fiercer scarecrow, and the crows a fiercer kite. Meanwhile, the wheat is dying from neglect. A watching owl manages to bring the two sides together, and they work out a compromise. This brief, simple story works on a literal level as well as on a metaphoric one. It is illustrated with Lionni's usual handsome, colorful collages which project well for reading aloud to groups. The owl is right - they're just SILLY.
By Ulyyf
Farmers plant wheat. Crows eat wheat. (I mean, the farmer conveniently plants this all-you-can-eat buffet for them!) If the farmers and the crows could talk, surely they could come to an amicable arrangement... right?
Maybe, maybe not. Maybe, instead of talking like sensible creatures, the farmer will outdo himself making progressively scarier scarecrows, and the crows will outdo EVERYBODY making progressively scarier scarefarmers, and in the meantime the wheat will wither in the field and nobody will get to eat some. At least, not until they talk it over for a change.
Very good and clear moral message for kids, and it juuuuuust avoids being too "preachy" and annoying.

Good Book
By S. J Parker
The farmer & the crows are at war. Each trying outdo each other in tactics. Owl is tired of the ongoing battle & the wheat is dying, so she takes on the role of diplomat.
Short, interesting & colorful. Great for kids

Let the birds show you how to compromise.
By FIRR-Kids!
This is a book about problem solving and compromise. A farmer is proud of his field of wheat. Having worked hard, he is anxious to harvest his crops. Little does he know that there are six winged deterrents perched in his way. A dozen noisy crows cluster in a nearby tree, also anxious to help themselves to the farmer's hard work. The black bodied birds swoop down into the field just as wheat is about to ripen.
The farmer chases the crows away, only to have them return. To trick them, he puts together a fearsome looking scarecrow, that holds a large stick in one hand. The birds devise a plan, striking back with their own equally fearsome looking bird kite. Both terrified and furious, the farmer retaliates by adding a second, larger scarecrow next to the first, this one with two sword and a very angry mouth. The birds amp up their creation. And so on, both sides getting angrier. It takes a wise owl (those birds always play the wise role, don't they?) who has been watching the proceedings to talk some sense into both parties before the wheat wilts.
The farmer and the crows all realize it is better for everyone to make peace and come to an agreement. At first they had feared it was too late to make peace, but the owl reassurred them that it was "never too late to talk things over." That's a wise owl, indeed. The wheat is saved and the owl transforms the angry scarecrow into a friendly one.
