A great way to learn Texas history!

I am reading 'GTT' for the second time. It reads more like a historical novel than a history book, making it entertaining and easy to finish. Campbell covers the history of what eventually became Texas, from the arrival of prehistoric humans 'over the land bridge' 12,000 years ago, to the 21st century. He presents specific details and facts in a story format, with memorable quotes liberally sprinkled in, that help you get the big picture and a sense of what it was like to be there.
I highly recommend GTT to those that were either born in Texas, or got here as quick as they could!

an excellent resource

I bought Gone to Texas as background reading for Texas history. It was an interesting and well written book. I, frankly, prefer T.R. Frerenbach's book, perhaps because his book is written more like a textbook, while GTT seems more narrative. There are a few factual differences between GTT and Frerenbach's Texas; they were minor, but somewhat troubling. Where these occured, I tended to follow Frerenbach. I have kept this book on my shelf as a good reference on Texas history.
