Motivational, but Redundant

I like Grant Cadone very much, and thought You're Either First or Your Last was pretty powerful.
When I heard about the 10X Rule, I ran out to buy it.
While the concept is powerful, and I HAVE learned a thing or two from the book, I thought it was terribly redundant.
If you are into Sales Motivation books, there is Nothing ground-breaking here.
The second to last chapter has a list of 32 qualities of sucessful people...and if you pay attention you will see that he repeats himself several times. I was able to consolidate the list down to about 24 items, maybe less.

Dont spend $20.00+ on this book. Just do this:
Understand and accept that no matter HOW bad the economy is, people ARE making money.
Set VERY high goals for yourself...make a powerful and convincing plan of action...and you'll be on the way to being successful. The higher you set the bar, and the harder you push yourself, the further along the track you will get.

The folks who DON'T plan and DON'T try are the ones whining about beinbg losers.
Don't be a loser.

Thisd book can potentially be life changing.

I've created many of my own products and sold millions online. Yet, I
took away some very valuable ideas from this book.

Here are the top 7 things I learned (or was reminded of in a positive way):

1. Instead of blaming the economy for down sales, blame your activity level for being too low

It's easy to get in the mindset that the problem is the market or the economy. He makes a
great case that the problem is the activity of you and/or the employees in your company.

2. Become omnipresent

He has a chapter about omnipresence. This is a GREAT mindset for marketing....become
omnipresent in your market.

3. Seek to dominate your market instead of being competitive.

Being competitive is the wrong target. This is a great point and changes your mindset
totally.

4. We consistently underestimate the activity level required to get a result

The problem isn't laziness or anything else. It's simply that we underestimate
the activity level required to launch a new product, make sales or create a
successful marketing funnel.

5. 10x thinking + 10x action

This isn't about thinking only (like Think and Grow Rich) or action only.
Action without the right thought behind it spins your wheels.

6. Set your goal to be 10x greater than you think you need

Expand your thinking. I like this idea. It changes the activities you
plan to reach your goal.

7. Plan to take 10x the actions you think you need

Now, there are a LOT of ideas and nuances I didn't list above. One
of the things he does that's terrific is covers objections to increasing
your activity level.

He made me think about some of the ideas in my own thinking and
re-evaluate them. Very useful.

I liked the book, with a couple of caveats

This book is probably better suited to sales professionals than it is for would-be entrepreneurs. The central thesis of the book is that extreme effort is the key to success and that we should never rest nor give up on our goals. While it is certainly true that, all else being equal, hard work will win out over mediocre effort, there are a couple of caveats:

1. Extreme effort will not turn a bad idea into a successful business. Suppose that an entrepreneur wishes to open a microbrewery centered around his recipe for broccoli-infused beer. If prospective customers strongly dislike the taste of the product, no amount of effort will make this recipe a commercial success. Hard work is necessary to become a successful entrepreneur, but it is not sufficient. Even good business ideas generally suck at the beginning, and it is crucial to modify and fine-tune ideas based on market feedback. Sometimes, the best course of action is to give up on an unsuccessful idea in order to free up time and resources to pursue more promising opportunities. Just like in poker, the trick is knowing when to throw more chips into the pile and when to fold. A sales professional who is promoting a product in an established market is different from an entrepreneur trying to become the next Elon Musk. In the former case, hard work is sufficient to be successful.

2. Extreme effort is best expended over short bursts of time rather than as a 24/7/365 lifestyle. Working 18-hour days is not sustainable over the long term. Your health will suffer, as will your mental focus. Success is like a marathon with periodic short-term sprints at key moments. It is physically impossible to sprint for the entire race.

I tried to check the following three items : Adansonia digitata, Ceiba pentandra, and Moabi, that are three of the most famous trees of Africa, and I was absolutely delighted to read a lot of very accurate, scientific information about them. There are also ethno-botanic and ethno-linguistic data, many vernacular names etc. The whole six vol. set is wonderful.

A spectacular debut

After Chris, an ordinary human, meets Elline, a beautiful Kindred woman in one of his classes, his life was never the same again.

The easiest way to explain the Kindred is that they're kind of like the X-Men. They look like ordinary humans, but they have different powers. There are weavers, menders and blade masters, and they can travel into a separate dimension in which a normal human being would die. They're extraterrestrial beings, but it's immediately unclear how they came to earth and got to know humans.

When dark creatures attack Elline and her father one evening, Chris finds himself in the middle of an otherworldly conflict. Elline steps in and Chris suddenly has the powers of the Kindred, but he's still human. His powers allow him to heal rapidly when he's in pain.

The author uses dreams and flashbacks to uncover Chris's past, and the constant time jumps through the first half of the book kept me on my toes. An evil Kindred named Cerulean captures Chris and tortures him with a mind leech to figure out how he got his healing powers. The story jumps from one point in Chris's life to three years later and back again through a series of vignettes from Chris's time under Cerulean's evil powers and a few random dreams.

It’s eventually discovered that the bad guys want to enslave the human race and lord over them with their superior, eclectic bunch of powers, and they believe Chris is the key to gaining more power. The book turns into a bit of a high school drama about halfway through. Chris finds out Elline is betrothed to Empyrean, an important official in the Kindred world, and she says she loves him, but she loves Chris, too. Conflict between Alicia and Raham makes an appearance about halfway through, but the characters were so newly introduced at that point, that I had a hard time caring about their relationship trouble.

Fantasy is tricky to read and write. Not only does the author need to have a great, fantastical, creative world to keep me captivated, but the characters need to be deep and interesting. The author needs to make his imagined world clear enough to understand quickly, and appealing enough to suck the readers in. While I was reading, I felt like the author focused so much energy on the timeline, the action, the mythical creatures and the world building that the characters suffered and seemed a little flat.

I could have used more honesty and straightforwardness from Chan’s characters, especially from Elline, who has potential as a major character, but who lacked a strong voice in this installment of the series. I’m hoping in future installments he uncovers more of his characters’ personalities and motivations. It seemed the main group of younger characters, which included Chris, Elline, Empyrean, Alicia and Raham, lacked assertiveness and simply accepted the rule of their parents and elders as the way society was.

That being said, the concept of David Anthony Chan’s book was pretty spectacular, and the action scenes were breathtaking. Chan deftly introduces the history and origins of his fantasy world through flashbacks and dialogue without being overt or boring. He’s not shy about killing off important characters.

I look forward to reading more from Mr. Chan in the future.

Powerfully written with great potential. A delight for lovers of action-packed fantasy!

“The Kindred Chronicles: Between Two Worlds” by D. A. Chan is an interesting work. It falls solidly into the Epic Fantasy genre and it is a powerfully written debut novel. There are good bones here, echoes of Tolkien and Poul Anderson and even Rowling can be detected. It is obvious that Mr. Chan is very well read and a fan of both ‘manga’ type graphic novels as well as anime inspired saga-fiction. The wedding of these disparate styles is deftly managed, and readers of these types of action-packed epic adventures will be very entertained by this work and by Mr. Chan’s hero, Chris Sayther.
Our story opens and we are introduced to Chris as he is attending a funeral. He is present, not as a mourner, but rather as a sort or investigator/reporter. There are dark forces afoot and we get a sense of mystery and occult surrounding this young man. The funeral ends and no sooner has he left the event and is on his way to deliver his report, when he and his mentor are attacked and Chris is made captive! He awakes to find himself imprisoned in a deserted warehouse. As he considers how he might escape he is confronted by Cerulean, a Weaver (one of the many races of Kindred, powerful arcane beings who are only now starting to reveal themselves to human-kind), who has betrayed his people and seeks to get information from Chris to use against his former allies. He subjects Chris to a particularly gruesome form of interrogation and the memories which he forces him to relive become the basis for an extended series of flashbacks which the author uses to build his description of the Kindred world, introduce the main conflict, describe the meeting and subsequent relationship between Chris and Elline, the daughter of the powerful Leader of the House of War Tironius and reveal the strange and unique powers which have been mysteriously granted to Chris, despite his mundane human origin.
If all this seems like a lot…it is, and the reader finds himself somewhat lost in the seemingly endless series of recollections/exposition employed by the author to flesh out his fantastical world, introduce the many, many races and creatures that people it and the various arcane cities and ancient houses and battles that make up its history and backstory. Once this forced recollection ends with yet another fantastically described battle/rescue scene where Chris’s powerful Kindred allies free him from Cerulean’s clutches the story really begins to pick up pace. No spoilers, but a full cadre of teen-aged supporting characters is assembled and together with Chris and Elline, they go on to face the challenges of not one but a whole shadowy cohort of treacherous and devious foes.
I gave this story a rating of three stars, though it should rate far higher. It was powerfully written and the author has obvious natural talent. The story loses points for the persistent disconnect between the reader and the protagonists, both hero and heroine. The descriptions of battle and the many cities and races of Kindred are well executed, powerful and exciting. In contrast the plot of this story wanders and the characters are somewhat undeveloped and static. The combination builds distance between the reader and the hero/heroine which persists throughout, leaving us unable to feel deeply or care about the fate of the protagonists or even the threat posed by the evil designs of the main antagonist. This story would benefit greatly from a through, professional editing, focusing on story-telling, plot progression and character development. This author has great potential and tremendous talent and with good editorial advice his work will shine! I look forward to reading more works from Mr Chan and I wish him success. Good show!

THE KINDRED CHRONICLES: Between Two Worlds D.A. Chan : A Review

The book pretty much impresses that D.A. Chan is a wonderful weaver of stories. Afficionados of anime, superhero flicks, and sci-fi fantasy genres like me would have a fun ride in this melting pot of various influences. I was able to discern inspiration from I AM NUMBER 4 villains, mutant beasts of the same and those of Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia (Gargs to IA#4 pikens and LOTR’s wargs). I also discerned some influence from Twilight (Chris for Bella, Alicia for Alice); the eerie suspense of Supernatural and Ghost Whisperer; and the stealthy shadow movements of Arrow’s League of Assassins. My imagination of Ethanos is in fact that of the tv show’s Ra’s al Ghul. I was also very impressed with the play of nuances from anime shows: “Bleach” (personification of the swords, and the “making” of the Hollows); Avatar (The Last Airbender/Legend of Kora) for the energy/matter weaving; and Naruto and Dragonball Z for energy balls. I could go on.

Even from the first page that started with “Ashes to ashes…” I was hooked. There were a lot of racy moments that kept me hanging on to find out how the plot thickens or thins out. The fight scenes were indeed breathtaking and the author did not scrimp on the details of the battle that included some “cool gore”. It was interesting how I, as the reader thought that I could predict the next unfolding but would be delightfully disappointed. Indeed, he did not shy away from killing a main character (not telling who ) but suspected it was just a prologue to something that would develop the tragedy into something pivotal to the succeeding installment. The characterization was effective enough for me – especially the villains. I found myself punching pillows out of genuine loathing for Cerulean, Havet, and Adamar. At times, I got frustrated by a main character’s weakness or her/his failure to destroy a villain but had to reassure myself that it was also necessary for the weaving of a story that will span several volumes.

The story, though riveting, engaging, and truly a page turner can get annoying in some areas when the suspense is suspended in the intricate details of thoughts, flashbacks, and other descriptions of crucial “moments”. I wanted to just skim through these and just go right into finding out what happens next. Despite the generous descriptions, I can’t help but find some “holes”. There was a point when I wondered, “how did they/he know his/their name(s)?”. Then again, just maybe I was too daft to thread the details or missed them altogether due to my skimming. Even as I anticipated a cliffhanger at the end of the book, I expected more “umph!”. Still, I think it was enough for the reader to want to read the next installment.

Given everything I have said and experienced from reading the manuscript, I myself am so looking forward to the next book!
