Potentially Useful but Lacks Comprehensive Answer Key

This book appears to potentially have merit as a practice book for standardized tests, such as the ERB. However, as a guide, the answer key section suffers from too many unhelpful 'answers' written only as "Answers may vary." For kids trying to get their arms around what test-givers expect to see, this is far from helpful and Carson Dellosa would serve the student better by suggesting at least some possible responses in these instances. On a plus side, the content seems relatively interesting, and the work involved is varied and reaches into thinking that involves capturing specific details, as well as putting the finger on what the big picture idea is (again, sometimes however leaving it up to the student to presume they may have gotten the "correct" response because often no specific suggested answer is given). Were it not for this, I would have perhaps given it a 5-star but as it stands now, a neutral.

About the Author

Greg Johnson has been a Professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design since 1996 after time as a graphic designer and an artist involved in television production. He received his MFA in Computer Arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design and his BA in Fine Arts from Louisiana State University in Shreveport. In addition to being a Professor, he also worked as a 3D Lead for Ascent Games and does freelance illustration work. Johnson has taught over fifty different courses in hundreds of classes in his eighteen plus years of teaching at the college level. His courses have included 3D sculpting, modeling, texturing, painting, animation, rigging, effects, programming, game design and development in the subject areas of computer art, game development, interactive design, and visual effects. He founded the Game Development department at SCAD and has developed courses for the Game Development, Computer Arts, Visual Effects, and Scientific Illustration areas of study at SCAD. For the last seven years he has been teaching an introduction to digital sculpture class using ZBrush.

Great book for Zbrush beginners

[[VIDEOID:mo4G6Z5MNXD8RW]]Getting Started in Zbrush is a very well done instructional guide for those looking to learn ZBrush for the first time.

Author Greg Johnson has been teaching ZBrush classes for the last seven years and is really knowledgable about ZBrush, at least based on what I can see in the book.

The book is basically one huge tutorial where you get to sculpt or model a dragon chilling out by a fire hydrant, the one you see on the cover. The tutorial is split into several chapters each talking about a specific step in the 3D sculpting workflow. Newcomers are warmed up by the introduction to the interface and basics, and then it quickly goes into the step-by-step tutorials.

The instructions are written in a concise and easy to follow manner. Lots of big screenshots are provided, and on those screenshots there are labels that point out locations of buttons or menus you need, the areas of the dragon model that you need to work on. Every later chapter builds on the previous so you get to work on the dragon from start to finish.

In general, you'll be learning basic sculpting to the extent of putting scales and wrinkles on the dragon. It also covers UVs and masking, colouring and texturing, lighting and rendering, and finally compositing. There are many smaller steps in between to refine the model, just to introduce different features of the software.

Everything you need is in the book, and there are other resources listed where you can find references, textures and help.

There's also a companion site with several hours of video demonstrations of selected tutorials. The companion website's link is on the back of the book so don't miss that.

This is a fantastic book for ZBrush beginners. The straightforward hands-on approach will get you learning the ins and outs of sculpting with ZBrush in no time.

Fantastic of the totally clueless and above :)

I had absolutely no idea how to use any part of ZBrush when I purchased the program–and it's a bewildering interface when you've never used it before. After following the steps in this book I am now independently managing the program with increasing confidence. I guess that says it all. Getting Started in ZBrush was definitely worth the purchase price for me.

Timothy Garton Ash is the author of The File, In Europe's Name, and three volumes of " history of the present" The Polish Revolution (winner of the Somerset Maugham Award), The Uses of Adversity (for which he was awarded the Prix Europé en de l'Essai), and The Magic Lantern, his personal account of the revolutions of 1989, which has now appeared in fifteen languages. A Fellow of Saint Antony's College, Oxford, he lives in Oxford with his wife and two sons.

Eyewitness Account of the Birth of Solidarity

Timothy Ash was sent to Poland in August 1980 to cover a strike by workers in a Gdansk shipyard. He ended up covering a 16 month struggle for national independence which ended when the Polish Army declared a State of War and crushed the Solidarity movement in December 1981. His account is compelling, human and covers not only events in Warsaw, but other Solidarity centres and strikes around Poland. This book is a wonderfully rich introduction to contemporary Poland and the events and attitudes that have shaped Polish thinking since the war. If you are interested in reading about the Polish struggle for independence this is the book for you.

Chronicle of Solidarity movement

This book, as far as I can tell, remains to this day one of the best written and most comprehensive reports on what was happening during the 18 or so months from the creation of Solidarity movement in Poland in August 1980 to the imposition of martial law on December 13, 1981. And the library of books on this subject, as far as English language is concerned, isn't big anyway.

First reason - the author was right where the action was, literally. And, unlike many other foreign correspondents, he did not limit himself to shallow, superficial observations calculated for fast print; he went further. He managed to get in touch with many Solidarity activists, on various levels, and through participation (as an observer) in meetings as well as conversations and interviews succeeded in getting more in depth description of what exactly was happening and explanation why and for what purpose.

Reporting of events, as important as it is in itself, was not the only feature of this book. Timothy Garton Ash also offers quite in depth, even if at times controversial, analysis of events and critical portraits of some key players in the political events - on both sides of the political 'barricade'. The characteristic of Wojciech Jaruzelski, the head of Polish government at the time (both Prime Minister and First Secretary of "PZPR" the Communist Party), particularly stands out as original and convincing.

I myself was actively involved in the Solidarity movement at that time and I can testify to the general accuracy of the statements contained in this book. No particular story, account of an event or critical analysis strikes me as improbable or outright false. Last but not least what also helps the book considerably is its lively, captivating narrative. It is, simply, a good read.

If the aim of the author was to bring Poland, its contemporary history and predicament closer to an English speaking reader, he graciously succeeded. I deem this book an essential reading for anyone who wants to get closer understanding of contemporary Poland and also some understanding of how it was like to live under the Communist rule in those years. Very highly recommended.

Thought-provoking at times

This is a good book for those interested in what happened in Poland during the 1980s. I found this book to be thought-provoking at times and the author, Professor Ash tries to maintain an objective outlook. However, there are parts where the book becomes boring (I will not mention where since I do not want to ruin any portion of this book for you). Ash is a great British writer, but he too at times brings his own British-outlook and this creates prejudice and bias. This, however, doesn't take from the book the fact that it is a great window into the Solidarity movement that erupted in Poland as a result of the authoritarian government.

One of the better ones

The mass and energy balance computations methods that is covered makes this book more ideal for practising chemical engineers than all the others out there. I think its quite ridiculous that all the other energy balance coverage is just for ideal systems with no enthalpy departure correction to the calculations. I understand that they are not thermodynamic books, but at least the chemical engineer should understand thats how its done in process simulators. So I give this book 4 stars on that account. I am only sorry its so old. The practising chemical engineer needs an updated version of such a book.

A Material and Energy Balance book that was ahead of its time.

Although this book was written in 1969, the contents are still applicable today. As Reklaitis wrote, "the book was ahead of its time". Material and Energy Balances can be very basic, as Henley and Bieber did with their book "Chemical Engineering Calculations" in 1959. It could be taken to the more advanced level as Reklaitis did with his book "Introduction to Material and Energy Balances" in 1983. In the present book Henley and Rosen used the early six chapters to cover the basics and the latter three chapters into the advanced levels.
