Hero in a dark time!!!

Yes, this is one of the authors of the famed or infamous `Left Behind' series (over 63 Million copies sold), and though that series started off well, it slowed down so much and became so dry I could just not finish it. This, on the other hand, is a third book in a new trilogy. It reads like a spiritual Tom Clancy or Dan Brown. The first two books in this series are Soon and Silenced and now finally Shadowed.
The premise or background in this series is based in a post World-War III world. In 2009 a new world government was established in Bern Switzerland. This WW3 is known as the religious war. Since then all religion has been banned and has been persecuted. The world has stopped using A.D. (anno Domini, `in the year of our lord') with the new designator P.3. (Post-World War III) Our book takes place 37 years later in 38 P.3. and our hero is an unlikely religious hero. Paul Stepola did a Masters in Religious Studies after serving in the military. He worked for the regime in power as a sort of cop and intelligence community officer. He often infiltrated religious groups to break them up and persecute them. In the earlier books, Paul's life went through a drastic change, from finding a letter his father wrote at his birth, in which his father declared his faith, to being blinded in an explosion, to being a believer.
Paul's journey went from being undercover to being under suspicion for being a double agent. In most of the second book he is suspected of having turned, yet continues to convince the government of his loyalty. In this final installment he has to go underground, and not only that, he has his wife and two children with him. He has been found out and is hiding with the Columbia underground when former colleagues start helping him evade authorities.
Can he save his family, can he help bring religious freedom to the world again? Will faith prevail or finally be squashed forever? Read this fast-paced book or the whole series and find out!

futuristic thriller

World War III was a holy war with no winners as survivors eke out an existence on a decimated planet. Reactionaries felt that religion was the cause of all wars and for this reason religion was banned and people who prayed openly were declared traitors and arrested. The Nation Peace Organization was formed to find the underground zealots and arrest them and until recently Paul Stepola was one of their best agents.

While hospitalized a believer talked to him and Paul eventually became a believer which was when his sight returned. He became a double agent, a mole who helped the believers whenever he could. With the oppression getting worse, the believers pray to God that the first born male of non-believers will die and He answers theirs their prayers proving to the world that he does exist since the underground announced the event before it happened. Neither Paul nor his son dies so the NPO knows that he is a believer. He and his family go on the run from the man who needs to punish his beliefs, his father in law, Ranold Decenti, the founder of the NPO. He wants his son-in-law his daughter and grandchildren punished for breaking the law.

This futuristic thriller in which religion is banned and an organization is formed to find and execute the traitors to the one world government is Jerry Jenkins at his very best. The characters are well developed, there is plenty of action and the storyline is believable because with God, all things are possible. The protagonist is a hero who risks his life to save the believers and overthrow the ban on religion while the antagonist is a frighteningly believable opponent who is more interested in power and revenge than the ideology he once believed in.

SHADOWED in the cloak of The Underground

This was a great finale to the SOON series. I enjoyed each book very much, but this one I liked the best. I blew through this one in about 4 days, which is pretty fast for me.

The concept of a futuristic one-world government is written well by the author. The idea of a banishment of all religion is quickly approaching, at least from a Christian stand-point because we are "judgemental" and "intollerable" Well, forgive us for being honest.

I liked the resolution of this series and I think that this trilogy had me hooked and more interested than the first 3 books in the Left Behind series. I liked LB alot also, I am not one of those bashers, but I thought that this story-line was more gripping than that one, at least the first books of it.

I hope to see more from Mr. Jenkins. He is an easy read, but that just means I can get through them faster and have more time to read more stories.

good text on mathematical statistics

Paul Hoel taught statistics at UCLA for many years. This book was one of the best introductions to mathematical statistics for a first year graduate course. It was used as a text for that purpose at UCLA and many other statistics departments across the country. Several editions of the book were published to keep it up to date. Currently it is a little dated and there are many advances particularly in the area of resampling methods and other computer-intensive statistical procedures that are not covered.

I think it is somewhat comparable to the combination of Erich Lehmann's books on hypothesis testing and the theory of estimation.

Statistical theory and application

I used the fourth edition in a college course and found it to be well written and very understandable (the fourth edition was pre-calculator and had math tables in the back). The book assumed only an elementary calculus background and so was not rigorous in proving every theorem introduced, but was pretty good in showing the derivation of commonly used results and formulas.

I particularly liked the problem sets which were a mix of theoretical and applied exercises (with answers to the odd numbers), and NOT a long list of statements to be proven.

The emphasis was on theory, but statistical theory developed from attempts to solve real life problems and this book recognized that and considered applications of that theory throughout.

Encyclopeadia Britannica

I knew this book's name from Bibiography for an Encyclopeadia Britannica (1993 edition) article Statistics. I have not read the book yet. I gave it a neutral rating (3 stars) since I assume the book at least is not a poor one. (Very likely it deserv a 4 or 5 star rating after I read it).

This is a very powerful and informative book. I was able to get a lot of information for my nursing report. I now have a better understanding of the history in the Nursing Profession. This is a very good book and an eye opener. Bravo!

uncomfortable intersection of racism and sexism

Hine tells an uncomfortable story of an era of pervasive racism and sexism. It deals with the intersection of race and gender expectations in the nursing profession of the US, up till 1950. In many countries, nursing was a predominently female occupation, and it had to struggle for level of responsibility and recognition, against a male medical profession.

But in the US, there was an overlay of race. Negro women also entered the profession. Or at least tried to. Hine describes how the white female nursing associations responded, by imposing racist exclusionary requirements. In part to try and garner some "respectability" from the white male doctoral hierarchy. A pernicious choice that led to the formation of parallel Negro nursing groups. For those of you who may have heard of the Negro baseball leagues, there are clear parallels.

A rebellion is right around the corner. Can Lyra help her husband, or is he the one that shouldn't be trusted?

After getting an insight into this couple’s marriage, which joined two planets, in Taming His Queen, we are given more into the life of Lyra and Astor. This book goes into detail on how the two met, the arrangement of their marriage, and their married life. I do should make everything easy, right? Not with these two!
Throughout this read, there are ups and downs in the marriage of the two. These ups and downs aren’t necessarily their own doing, but of course outside forces that have a major impact on the union. A revolution is plotted against Astor’s planet and people, but will sweet Lyra be able to stop if from coming to fruition? Read this book to see all that Lyra went through, with lots of hot lovin’ showing how amazingly compatible the two truly are, and the Domestic Discipline that could eventually help Lyra let go all that is bad in her life if she only allows it. Great read! Can’t wait to read more from this author!

There's so much to love about Casey McKay's first sci-fi spanking romance

There's so much to love about Casey McKay's first sci-fi spanking romance. First of all, the arranged marriage to a strict (but loving) man from another planet where women are corrected with good old-fashioned physical discipline, is delicious! You get to watch the culture class of Lyra, an independent female from Earth, grapple with having a powerful, dominant husband who won't accept all her little rebellious without delivering a firm, bare-bottomed spanking.

The plot flies along, with intrigue from rebel warriors and a time machine that Lyra has been forbidden by her new husband to use. I loved Astor, her empathic husband, who is able to modulate her discipline perfectly because he can read her every mood. Oh, and he's a doctor, so there's a very hot punishment examination (and whipping) scene-- YUM!

Fun characters and lots of heat!

Casey gets you right into the action and keeps the pace fast in this enjoyable read! If you enjoy stories that include domestic discipline style spankings (not too severe) that often tie into sex between the hero and heroine, this is the perfect read! Casey has a fun, light-hearted writing style and includes humor and lively dialogue. I've never been especially into sci-fi romances, but Casey made me rethink the genre! I especially enjoy the mental/mind-reading connection between Lyra and Astor, and how they work through their misunderstanding and mistrust to achieve a deep, satisfying love.

Good enough.

Good enough for practice. No one knows the content of the SAT math perfectly, there is just not enough public information about the new test despite what the College Board says.

Barron's does not disappoint. It is not perfect, but it covers enough material to get you thoroughly prepared. As a prep coach who has used Barron's for my own test prep, I like their content. What is best for prep is old released tests ("QAS"), but of course there are no released SAT for the 2016 version. I am looking forward to seeing a few tests for myself.

With the exception of the the error I showed in the picture attached to this review, I really like this book. It isn't as wordy and overwhelming as Kaplan's, and it walks you through problems. I like how they don't provide info in large, chunky paragraphs that lose me at times; this book tends to be very straightforward.
