How expensive consulting firms create their presentations

Where do the most compelling strategy presentations come from? The answer, of course, is from top tier management consulting firms, according to Dave McKinsey in this book. So the author uses slide decks prepared by McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group and Accenture to demonstrate his principles, bearing in mind that strategic storytelling is mostly about what you do before you actually speak to a group.

On reading the book, two things become very plain: the author uses the word “story” to describe a strategy presentation, rather than to describe something you might read in a storybook or see in a movie; and the author’s concept of a good presentation slide has a whole lot more words on it than the maximum of six recommended by Seth Godin and other visual presentation authorities. Perhaps the strategy presentations are intended primarily as printed documents, rather than to support a speech; this theory seems to be supported by the way the author provides a complete analysis of the presentations without having to consider any words which might have been spoken.

The three presentations analysed in the book are presentations made by consulting firms to the US Postal Service, relating to the very difficult strategic challenges faced by the USPS. The presentations give some interesting insight into the advice you are likely to get when you engage expensive consultants, and the author provides a very useful commentary on structure and content for such presentations and the best ways to provide visual representations of information.

Feels like it was rushed to print

I have several issues with “Strategic Storytelling” by Dave McKinsey, paperback edition 2014. It’s an attempt to use three related PowerPoint presentations to the United States Postal Service as examples of presentation structure and design.

First, there isn’t enough content to make an entire book. There is some good material, but in trying to exhaustively cover each presentation, the contents and details of the actual presentations often obscure the lessons. There are “tips” called out in bold type throughout each chapter, but most of them are so obvious that they dilute the impact of those ideas that are worthwhile. They also don’t seem to follow any sort of underlying organization, or method for comprehension. If you missed any throughout the chapters, you can find them collected at the end of the book; all 87 of them in one long list.

Second, the book layout doesn't match the slide on each page with the text on that page, so there is constant confusion as to which slide is being discussed. Also, the slide references contain both the book Figure number and the presentation slide number (which are duplicated across all three decks); it’s too many numbers and too much flipping back and forth.

Third, this book needed at least one more round of proof-reading. I found three really glaring errors: Page 34 has a Figure placeholder “x” instead of the actual reference to Figure 3-3; Page 71 says “…cumulative loss through 202o” with a small letter “o” instead of a zero as the final digit; and Page 242 says “Finally, one particularly important but often forgotten practice by all levels of people is to verbally acknowledging others within the organization…” Shouldn't the word “acknowledging” be merely “acknowledge”?

Overall, it’s a disappointment.

This is a great book for professionals who look for how to create business presentations rather than keynote(ballroom) presentations. The whole book is a case study how Mckinsey, BCG and Accenture delivered presentation for USPS.

*STARRED REVIEW* The conclusion of this volume s title poem finding food / is not a joke. / Living things must eat / or croak with its blunt appraisal of the whey of the world per se, sets the tone of Hauth and Clark s graphic exploration of who eats what. As the poet delicately surveys the somewhat unsavory aspects of survival, the illustrator s hilarious watercolor-and-ink renderings defuse the deadliness of the subject matter. The result is an enriching overview of the natural world spiced with a Dorothy Parker esque sense of the macabre that children will absolutely relish. A telling example is Waste Management, in which a light treatment of the turkey vulture s carrion-loving ways It likes to feast before the worms, / which saves us all from stink and germs is dramatized. Serenely smiling, it pulls ruby, taffy-like sinews from a ribcage while a tiny fly rests on the tip of a cloven hoof separated from its former haunches by a bloody tire track. Other poems look at the wildly diverse ways in which organisms lure or capture their prey; still others break down sophisticated concepts like symbiosis and parasitism in brilliantly accessible terms. Hauth's funny, eloquent poems celebrate the often-grisly realities of the food chain, depicted in Clark's scraggly ink and watercolor illustrations. Amazing diversity of feeding strategies--and many rhyme!

Concise and interesting descriptions of odd strategies that animals--ranging from sloths to dermestid beetles--use to fill their bellies. There's even a poem about a carnivorous plant--the Venus Fly-Trap! Examples of feeding strategies covered include a description of how the little brown bat turns its body into a sort of bowl to scoop up insects at night, and how the wood turtle stomps the ground with its feet to make a sound like rain that convinces the worms to surface--whereupon the turtle--you guessed it--eats them. And where else are you going to find "species" rhymed with "feces"...? Illustrations are lively--capture the joy and desperation of eating and being eaten, respectively.

What a terrific combination of quirky humor, scientific accuracy and beautiful illustrations! Even icky things are fun in this book. Every poem is uniquely laid out on the page with its illustration and many different kinds of rhythms and rhymes are used. Make sure to read all the way to the back of the book for the scientific info on each critter - I finally learned what a phalarope is. This book is good fun for everyone, kids and grown-ups alike. It's a real gift to the field of children's books.

3.5 is a better rating. As a overview it is ok but if you are looking for a in-depth manual this is not it. For a beginner who wants a general intro presented in a well organized way this is a good book.

Alicia Michaels delivers yet another stunning tale in her series. The characters develop in a believable way and she twist the story so you can't wait to see what happens next

THE RESISTANCE

Book 2 started off with a bang and continued with its momentum. Gage' s father ego knows no bounds. He'll sell out his own children if it means the pursuit of his own power. He is willing to let his own granddaughter to be killed. And he only let Gage live because he saw him as tool to use in his master plan. Spoiler alert, let's not forget he even sanction the the hit on his lover's family.

Furthermore I still keep keep wondering if Dax and Blythe will ever hook up. How will Blythe react to Gage not being dead? And I want to see more on the relationship of Janika and the Professor. Will the public ever find out about the government involvement with the Rejects. And can modern society ever reconsil robotic human with normal humans; even within families? This book is full of questions. I am eagerly waiting on book 3.

An action packed sequel that will leave you wanting more!

After reading the first book The Bionics I instantly fell in love with the characters and the story so naturally i read book 2 and i have to say this book was intense!!! There was so much action going on i had to know what happened next. I couldnt put this book down. The suspense and twists and turns left me begging for more.especially after that ending wahh!!
This book had me going through so many emotions. Seriously so much stuff happened I cant even get into it without giving anything away. All i can say is I laughed, I yelled, and I cried like a baby and you will too. You wont regret picking up this novel which is just as fantastic, if not better, than the original. The edgier tone will leave you breathless and dying for book 3. Definitely get yours today you wont regret it!!
