Real answers for real software professionals
By Alex F. Dietz
Finally! A book that talks about the real success factors to get software projects completed. John Fox has done a real service to the software industry by talking about core human psychology in relation to software development. This book resonates with my personal experience managing a team of software engineering professionals and the lessons we learned the hard way. You won't find a single line of code in this book, or a list of software metrics to measure, or debate of an agile process vs. waterfall. What you will find is an extensive survey of studies in human psychology as applied to people involved in development software. He discusses the different human shortcomings that tend to influence the different parts of a project: estimation & planning, project execution, field issue analysis, etc. plus how to recognize and manage this in your project -- essential information for any project/program manager.
My personal favorite is chapter 11 which has a great title "Cognitive Malware". Fox shows how cognitive dissonance (holding two conflicting beliefs at the same time) swiftly sinks a software team, no matter how carefully the project is planned or how smart the people are. Haven't we all watched highly talented groups fail time and again? I sure have - I could have used this chapter 10 years ago. He backs up his discussion with data from studies showing how cognitive dissonance plays a factor in team decision making.
This isn't information you'll find in a project management body of knowledge or course on software management. That's a shame because what Fox discusses has more to do with software success than almost anything else a team leader can do. Bottom line, if you a committed software manager, project team lead, program manager, or just an engineer who wants the team to work better together, read this book. And then share it with a peer.
