About the Author
Irvin D. Yalom, M.D., is professor emeritus of psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He was the recipient of the 1974 Edward Strecker Award and the 1979 Foundation's Fund Prize in Psychiatry. He is the author of When Nietzche Wept (winner of the 1993 Commonwealth Club gold medal for fiction), Love's Executioner, Every Day Gets a Little Closer (with Ginny Elkin), and the classic textbooks Inpatient Group Psychotherapy and Existential Psychotherapy. Molyn Leszcz, M.D., F.R.C.P.(c) is head of the Program in Psychotherapy at the University of Toronto.

The "master" speaks to grasshopper...

Yalom has vast knowledge and experience with group therapy, and in this book he imparts it to neophyte counselors in a logical and detailed format. He carefully explains the therapeutic value of a group, the factors necessary to facilitate change, and the role of the therapist. He emphasizes the here-and-now focus, and how group members create a social microcosm of their life within the therapy group. Yalom advises on practical matters, like the selection of clients and the creation of the group. He then carefully explores the stages that groups move through, and some problem members that one could encounter.

The drawbacks of this volume include the length - it is excessively long (they could cut chapter 9) due to the verbosity of the author. I had to look up several words and phrases that I was unfamiliar with, and I have to admit, some pages bored me. Nevertheless, for a text, this is a great book. I read every page, to the end, even the unassigned chapters. I'll keep this in my library for reference, and I hope to be able to refer to it repeatedly.

I love reading Yalom. He makes group therapy concepts flow like a river. I would give this as a gift to every student of psychology, psychiatry, nursing, social work, that I know. Not having won the lottery, I am thrilled to have it in my own library.

authentic and proficient towards human health

Cristal clear, authentic, proficient, interpersonal aproach.I read the book 10 - 12 hours per day, almost without pause.Useful in all paradigms. The therapeutic factors are : instilation of hope,universality, imparting information, altruism, corrective recapitulation of thr primary family group. The comparative value of the clients'and therapists' views are very usefully presented.Working in the Here-and-Now, positive and negative catharsis ( with corrective interpretation),and the liaison with other books of professor Yalom, are only a few ideas of this great book. I recommand it for student, teachers and everyone interested in personal development.

What is addiction, especially alcoholism?
If it is a disease then what are the core symptoms and are they helped?
Are the studies well controlled and peer reviewed or falsified?

I recommend the book for anyone wanting a better understanding of addiction but leary of presentations that perpetuate outdated ideas. And good to see articles on nicotine, especially the one on how teenagers can get addicted so easily and quickly. I would refer anyone looking for a reason to quit smoking - or a reason not to start - to the article "Hooked from the First Cigarette."
While clearly written and very readable, there were a number of minor formatting problems (spaces in the middle of words; missing hyphens; missing words) in my Kindle text that I didn't expect from Scientific American. Also, in the introduction, heroin- the drug - is spelled: heroine. Does anyone proofread these days?

Hilbert Transform Applications in Mechanical Vibration addresses recent advances in theory and applications of the Hilbert transform to vibration engineering, enabling laboratory dynamic tests to be performed more rapidly and accurately. The author integrates important pioneering developments in signal processing and mathematical models with typical properties of mechanical dynamic constructions such as resonance, nonlinear stiffness and damping. A comprehensive account of the main applications is provided, covering dynamic testing and the extraction of the modal parameters of nonlinear vibration systems, including the initial elastic and damping force characteristics. This unique merger of technical properties and digital signal processing allows the instant solution of a variety of engineering problems and the in-depth exploration of the physics of vibration by analysis, identification and simulation.

This book will appeal to both professionals and students working in mechanical, aerospace, and civil engineering, as well as naval architecture, biomechanics, robotics, and mechatronics.

Hilbert Transform Applications in Mechanical Vibration employs modern applications of the Hilbert transform time domain methods including:

• The Hilbert Vibration Decomposition method for adaptive separation of a multi-component non-stationary vibration signal into simple quasi-harmonic components; this method is characterized by high frequency resolution, which provides a comprehensive account of the case of amplitude and frequency modulated vibration analysis.
• The FREEVIB and FORCEVIB main applications, covering dynamic testing and extraction of the modal parameters of nonlinear vibration systems including the initial elastic and damping force characteristics under free and forced vibration regimes. Identification methods contribute to efficient and accurate testing of vibration systems, avoiding effort-consuming measurement and analysis.
• Precise identification of nonlinear and asymmetric systems considering high frequency harmonics on the base of the congruent envelope and congruent frequency.
• Companion website houses MATLAB®/ SIMULINK codes.

Excellent

Well written. Covers the basics of Hilbert transforms very well. As the title says, the emphasis is on mechanical engineering. There are useful Matlab codes on the Author's website. I'm an electronic engineer with interests in communications and signal processing and it would be useful to have a book which covers these application areas of the Hilbert transform. I previously gave this book 4 stars but on reading the book in a lot more detail, it deserves 5 stars.

There are a lot of great applications of the Hilbert Transform contained therein. An EXCELLENT addition to Nonlinearity in Structural Dynamics by K. Worden and G.R. Timlinson. Can come across a bit as a cheer-leading session for the Hilbert Transform as an analytical tool, but is overall a good read.

Renenber--weird is interesting!

If a tree falls down in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it just become a dead log? No, it becomes home to many different creatures! After an opening letter by "Your balled-up buddy, Roly-poly," author Anthony D. Fredericks uses catchy rhymes to describe a great oak tree that is hit by lightning and blown down by the wind, and then after it begins to decay the termites that feed on the rotting wood, a salamander that hides under it, the roly-polies that live in it, the garter snake that slides over it, the red velvet mites that crawl on it, the daddy longlegs that creep around it, and the chipmunk that climbs it. What will the school class see when they walk past the log on a field trip?
The full color, life-like drawings by illustrator Jennifer DiRubbio help to reinforce the many valuable lessons about nature that children can glean from the book which, in addition to the information about the different creatures, include the concept of habitat, the interconnected relationships of different plants and animals, and the earth's way of recycling. The repetitive character of the poetry will be encouraging to beginning readers. At the end, there are two pages of field notes about the tree and animals, and two more pages with suggestions for activities and projects. Similar books by Fredericks are Under One Rock, which I have read and reviewed, In One Tidepool, Around One Cactus, Near One Cattail, and On One Flower. As our friend the roly-poly reminds us in his introduction, "I have lots of weird neighbors, and remember, weird is interesting." This entire book is interesting!

This is a wonderful book with great detail in the pictures. The author helps us understand part of the world that we often ignore or miss...and students LOVE to explore this subject. This is a must have for first-grade teachers! Great book!

A Cherry of a Book!

Many books and stories out there about the Doors. Jim Cherry did an excellent job in this book.
The Doors Examined was an easy and in depth book about the events and people surrounding the Doors. I will read this one again as it gives the reader, not only an overview of the events that happened, but also how people around the Doors (JM)were responding to the events. It is pretty clear that Jim Morrison had a different perspective on the band than the other members, which was instrumental in ending the journey (band and life?). a recommend read -

A weird thing, I had just finished this book and began reading Ray Manzarek's book "Light My Fire" the day before Ray passed, I also had Nirvana in my car the day Kurt Cobain died (made me wonder how Paul Rothchild felt when Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin passed - he worked with both); spooky!

Another great read is John Densmore's "The Doors, Unhinged"

Honest Rock `n' Roll

Jim Cherry's book, The Doors Examined, serves as both a basic introduction to the Doors and a solid history of the group. Cherry has the ability to remain unbiased as he sorts through and reports facts, which is helpful for readers wanting a balanced perspective.

These selections are taken from his long-standing website, the Doors Examiner, which has proven to be a reliable source of information. His enthusiasm for the music and each of the musicians is strong throughout, which helps carry the multiple threads. The chapters are roughly organized by chronology, though there are slight overlaps, which I liked; readers can thumb through out of sequence, then shift forward.

Besides being a journalist, Jim is a novelist; his writing is carefully honed for meaning. I particularly enjoyed new nuggets on the early years & influences and recommend this book to anyone who wants a compact yet through reference on the Doors.

Nicely put together basket of info

Nice collection of tidbits, insights, perspectives and information. Assembled in a way that makes it an easy read giving the ability to jump from here to there. One issue I have is the exclusion of 'Morrison Hotel' in the album overview section. How do you leave out Morrison Hotel? Sheesh! Haha! Other than that, a great collection of moments in Time and people in play and the influences of both.
