ADRIAN FURNHAM is Professor of Psychology at University College, London, UK. He is on the editorial board of a number of journals, has received many awards, and is recognized as the most productive psychologist in the world,. He is the author of over 800 journal articles and more than 60 books, including successful, popular management books. He acts as a consultant to a number of multinational corporations. He has written regular columns in The Financial Times, Daily Telegraph and Sunday Times and is a frequent contributor to BBC radio and television.

EVGENIYA PETROVA came all the way from cold Russia to Great Britain studying at three different universities along the way. Trained as a psychologist with a background in international politics and diplomacy she worked as a researcher for Advertising Association, YSC and Mountainview Learning consultancies. Authors Adrian Furnham and Evgeniya Petrova set out to debunk popular myths about body language, particularly any promises that you can learn to "read people like a book." Lastly, they offer practical strategies to consider in using your body language as well as decoding others' signals. About the Author
WILLIAM F. ROSENBERGER is an associate professor (with tenure) of mathematics and statistics at The University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is also an adjunct associate professor of epidemiology and preventive medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He serves as a biostatistical consultant on several clinical trials data and safety monitoring boards for the NIH, VA, and industry. He received his PhD in mathematical statistics from The George Washington University.

JOHN M. LACHIN III is presently Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, and of Statistics, at The George Washington University. He holds a ScD in biostatistics from the University of Pittsburgh. He also serves as Director of the Graduate Program in Biostatistics and as Director of the Coordinating Center for two nationwide studies in diabetes.

Excellent textbook to debate modern presidential issues...perhaps challenging for those who know little about presidency

I read this textbook for my POLS 413: U.S. Presidency class along with another textbook called "The American Presidency" 5th edition by Milkis and Nelson. "Understanding the Presidency" 6th edition does a good job complementing "The American Presidency." While "The American Presidency" presents an outline for the major changes in the presidency during a chronological approach, this textbooks ("Understanding the Presidency") contains essays in which political scientists debate many issues pertinent to the modern presidency.

The following are some examples of the issues discussed:

the nominating process
the presidential mandate (contains Dahl's article "The Myth of the Presidential Mandate")
the permanent campaign
the president's ability to manage the government
the unitary executive theory
the president's relationship with Congress
prerogative powers to fight War of Terror

In most sections, Pfiffner seems to try to give both sides of the story. For example, when judging George W. Bush' legacy as president, Pfiffner includes an anti-Bush essay by Sean Wilentz entitled "The Worst President in History?" and a pro-Bush essay by Karl Rove entitled "The Long View."

OVERALL OPINION:

I think the textbook is a bit difficult for introductory students who do not know much about the presidency (ex: students who have not memorized the list of presidents and who do not know some of the major events that occurred during each presidency). However, if you combine this text with another text such as "The American Presidency," I certainly think introductory students could learn a lot.

Certainly, I recommend the textbook for those who are ready and eager to discuss and debate questions like: "Did George W. Bush abuse his power as president when adapting a view of presidential power called the unitary executive theory? If so, what are some arguments that one might employ to justify his behavior? What are some counter arguments to the arguments that attempt to justify Bush's behavior?"

A must have for anyone looking to make whips or improve their skills

For anyone that's ever thought of making a whip, this book is the best source of comprehensive knowledge available. Covering everything from making the core all the way to tying on the finishing knots. All the instructions are very clear and straightforward allowing for anyone to be able to make a fully functional whip even if you have no prior experience. Having had none before, this book allowed me to build my first whip and gave me the knowledge necessary to make bigger and longer whips. All in all, this book is a must have!

This book has all you need to know to complete a nice looking whip

Steven has done an excellent job of putting together a book explaining the build of a whip from start to finish using paracord. Personally, I am an experienced braider, still I had a problem with the proper construction of the core. Steven explains that quite well in this book. Not sure what it is in some of the other reviews that some readers failed to understand about this subject.

I found it quite comprehensive for a beginning braider.

Will have to contact the author, not really a problem just a hindrance.

ALAN DEAN FOSTER has written in a variety of genres, in-cluding hard science fiction, fantasy, horror, detective, western, historical, and contemporary fiction. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Star Wars: The Approaching Storm, as well as novelizations of several films including Star Wars, the first three Alien films, and Alien Nation. His novel Cyber Way won the Southwest Book Award for Fiction in 1990, the first science fiction work ever to do so. Foster and his wife, JoAnn Oxley, live in Prescott, Arizona, in a house built of brick that was salvaged from an early-twentieth-century miners brothel.

Back before Star Wars got domesticated

I read this book in 1978, when I was seven years old, and I thought it was terrific. I read it again three years ago, and I still think it's terrific. I'm delighted to see that it's still (back?) in print, because I think it has a heck of a lot more spirit and energy than most of the Star Wars franchise drivel being pumped out nowadays.
Reading through the other reviews I see a lot of "I liked it a lot, but"--followed by some complaint about an inconsistency with the subsequently established Star Wars canon. I know that there's a bit of popular mythology out there that George Lucas had the entire Star Wars series plotted out before he put the first one on celluloid, but I'm here to tell you it ain't so (check out Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays by Laurent Bouzereau for the skinny on this). That is, there was no way for Alan Dean Foster to know that Luke, Leia, and Vader were family, or that Vader was a cyborg under all that armor, or that Leia and Han were going to get romantic, or that Luke would get his lightsaber-wielding butt stomped in the next movie, or that Leia would develop beyond the sarcastic damsel in distress we saw in the first movie.
Which is all to say that DESPITE what you read in these other reviews, Foster actually does a pretty terrific job of making this consistent with the characters AS THEY ARE PORTRAYED IN THE FIRST MOVIE. The reason they're different from their portrayals in Empire, Jedi, etc. is that, well, the characterization in the original film was pretty thin. Luke, Leia, Han, Vader--even the droids and Chewbacca--really only developed three dimensional personalities in the second film. So this is a decidedly different Luke and Leia than the ones you're used to, and--swamp planet aside--this doesn't feel like most of the Star Wars that's come since. If the Star Wars that's come since can be compared to Lord of the Rings (epic scope, huge conflict), this is more like one of those original, great Conan novels by Robert E. Howard--well done, fun stuff, but a bit raw.
And THAT'S why you should buy it. ...

THE STAR WARS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN

The first novel to take the adventures of Luke Skywalker beyond what we now call Episode IV: A New Hope, "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" drops Luke and Leia onto a primitive jungle planet where the stranded duo must contend with bizarre alien tribesmen, ravenous monsters, labrynthine caves, and roving bands of Imperial stormtroopers--all the while coming ever closer to the romance early Star Wars fans thought was written in the stars. While fleeing the Empire's soldiers, Luke and Leia learn from a Force-sensitive old woman that the backwater planet they've chanced on is home to a mythical crystal that can give its wielder heretofore unimagined power over the Force itself. But Luke and Leia aren't the only ones in on the revelation: the promise of even greater power lures Darth Vader himself, setting up a spell-binding climax including a lightsaber duel that compares favorably with any the films have offered thus far. Naturally, no novel written in '78 can jive with the Star Wars continuity as the movies have developed it since then, but that's not the author's fault. Alan Dean Foster has been of the world's best sci-fi writers for years, and "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" is first class storytelling. Contitnuity nothwithstanding, this is an outstanding and thoroughly entertaining stand-alone novel. What else matters?

Very interesting...

This book was the first one authorized by Lucasfilm after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope and it is very good. Alan Dean Foster introduced us to a great sidestory with this and he must have helped many people out back in 1978 by tiding them over till the release of The Empire Strikes Back.
The story is interesting enough. Luke and Leia go on a search for the Kaiburr crystal, which is said to make someone indestructible with the Force. Obviously, they have to find it first, to keep it out of the Empire's hands, especially those of Darth Vader.
The best part of this book happens to be the best reason to buy this book: Luke's confrontation with Vader. All I'll say is that there is some great foreshadowing in this meeting. Read it and see what I mean.
Another interesting thing about this book is that it was written in 1978, so Foster only had the first movie to go on. That makes for some interesting interaction between Luke and Leia. Remember, nobody knew they were related yet.
I thoroughly enjoy this book. I'm positive that any Star Wars fan out there would too, so do yourself a favor and buy this excellent book!

An Important Discussion of ALL the Inputs Needed for Climatology Models

(Bias Alert: If being a denier means not blindly accepting the IPCC public results and recommendations at face value, then I am a denier. If it means totally rejecting all climate impacts of CO2 I am not,)

"The Neglected Sun" is a serious discussion of the influences on climate change - many of which are apparently ignored by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) models. It goes into significant detail about natural influences on global warming including: solar effects (solar cycles, visible light, UV, magnetic field), low level cloud cover, water vapor, recurring climate features (ENSO, PDO, NAO), ozone, the ionosphere ,etc. - and CO2. Numerous references are provided for each chapter with embedded callouts. Information is presented fully and in detail. Deficiencies in the IPCC modeling approach and and its public statements are discussed in a way that will be viewed as relatively unbiased by anyone that is not likely to call someone a "denier".

In trying to get a realistic picture of what is coming in the climate change arena, I have read a lot of climatology and oceanography books, both good and bad, alarmist and dismissive, unbiased and political; this is one of the two or three best that I have come across so far. In my opinion, decisions about climate change are too important to be dictated in the political arena by governmental agencies and private interest groups. As this book indicates, we must return to true scientific method in climatology - with research data openly disseminated for review, allowed skepticism, and the ability of all interested scientists to attempt to replicate results in an open forum. This book describes a much wider spectrum of climate modeling inputs than is currently considered in IPCC models.. This review may be criticized by the claim that the predominance of climatologists are well aware of solar and other natural impacts on global warming - and I agree with that. Unfortunately these inputs have apparently been ignored in the heavily-edited models and public statements of the IPCC.

The book is slightly repetitive and not as well organized as it could be. In the Kindle edition there are also many areas of random spaces inserted into words, especially before a final "y".

This is not an easy read, relatively technical but if you stick with it you get a good sense on the many effects the sun has on our climate. It also explains the lack of those very significant climate effects in the computer models of our climate which are the sole source being used to form very expensive policies to avoid global warming.

Good References, Decent Outline...

The book is written to a college classroom audience and this can become distracting. Ironically, I ordered this book only because I thought it was a textbook I had used once. It isn't the book I used. But even expecting a "textbook" didn't lessen my occassional frustration with the tone.
Overall I think it is a very good resource full of useful information, but don't expect a lot of detail. You'll cover a lot of ground and sometimes feel the urge to raise your hand and ask a question. A sample of a completed advertising plan as a reference might be a helpful addition. For people not benefiting from the classroom or hands-on advertising experience, some of the text might be a bit vague. Your told a lot of "what" more than your told "how" or "why." So if you're looking for a guide to what goes into making an advertising campaign and don't need to know a lot about the hows and whys, then this book might be useful. (I'm not sure who these people might be, however...) Otherwise, be prepared to dig around a little while using this book. And that, by the way, isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Can be read in three hours. Worth one.

I have worked in the advertising agency business for 25 years, and have searched high and low for a good book on how IMC is done. This book falls in the category of "one man's experience" and is not the end of my search. It's only minimally reflective of any reality I have experienced and is very basic. Plus, I'm not going to recommend a book that opens with the author's view of the vital importance of correct spelling, and then is filled with errors. He lost all credibility right there.

I have been working on my yoga practice for over 30 years. I have read many books on the subject over the years. I found this CD set to be a great addition to my library. Mr. Freeman does a wonderful job of distilling the many threads of yogic philosophy into a very digestible form.
I have loaded it onto my iPod, and listen to it as I am out and about.
If you are interested in what goes on behind Yoga. This is for you. I could not recommend it more.

This is an outstanding purchase, without artifice and jargon. Highly recommended for the ever-expanding Yoga community and other seekers as well.
