Creative Activity Opportunity For Mad Men Fans
By ComeFlyWithMe23
The illustrations could use more detail. I wish there were 10-15 more pages. The product seems overpriced. Please note this coloring book is for adults, exactly as stated in the title.

I used crayons to color in my book, which may be too thick for some areas. Colored pencils may work best for details.

I liked that this book gave me the opportunity to do a creative activity and enjoy it as an adult. Easy way to use creative side. I went back to watch some episodes so I can get the colors right.

A good choice for super-fans of Mad Men
By L. Osborne
There's not much detail in the pictures and they are bit roughly drawn, so if you are looking for a good adult coloring book -- this isn't quite it. It is, however, a fun item for fans of Mad Men. In other words, it's a great item to add to your collection of Mad Men related items. But I cannot recommend it as a coloring book.

Salt of the Earth: The Church at the End of the Millennium - An Interview with Peter Seewald, by Peter Seewald, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, well-known Vatican prelate and head of the Congregation on the Doctrine of the Faith, gives a full-length interview to secular journalist Peter Seewald, on a host of controversial and difficult issues facing Catholicism and Christianity at the end of the millennium. Similar to his best-selling book interview in 1985, The Ratzinger Report, he responds with candor and insight, giving answers that are often surprising and always thought-provoking on a series of wide-ranging topics regarding the present and future state of Christianity.

Ratzinger begins by discussing his own life, including his family life, being a theology professor and writer, becoming a Bishop, Cardinal and the Pope's top authority on doctrine. He then discusses the problems of the Catholic Church today and talks about the challenges and hopes of the future of Church and the world at the beginning of the Third Millennium.

About the Author
On April 19, 2005, CARDINAL JOSEPH RATZINGER was elected POPE BENEDICT XVI and became the 264th successor to Peter as the "Vicar of Jesus Christ." He may well be the most accomplished theologian to be elected Pope in modern times. Beginning in 1981 he spent over 20 years as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a role often depicted as the "defender of the faith." Cardinal Ratzinger was also President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and of the Preparatory Commission that codified the new "Catechism of the Catholic Church," published in 1994.

Insights into the new pope's direction
By FrKurt Messick
For those who want a keen insight into the life and formation of the new pope, Benedict XVI, most recently known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, this book is a must read. Most of the text is done as an interview with Peter Seewald, a German journalist, who does a question-and-answer format, but not in a choppy form. The answers are extended reflections, giving ample space to discussion of real, substantive issues of the church and the world.

The first section of the book concentrates on Ratzinger himself; the interview is nearly ten years old now, but the insights are still apropos to the man who is now the pope. Ratzinger did not look at the questions beforehand, and his responses, while not quite off-the-cuff, still have a spontaneity to them that is perhaps at odds with the more conservative image Ratzinger has come to bear. He is a conservative, to be sure, but in these pages along with other books, one may find a bit more compassion and humour than one might expect.

Ratzinger reflects upon his strict upbringing as a child, his time as a child of a 'simple commissioner', and his growth in a devout Catholic family who tended to go to Mass twice on Sundays.

Ratzinger became a theology professor, teaching at the universities at Tubingen and Regensburg. Heidegger is a big influence on Ratzinger's philosophical development, as are notions of Personalism (a philosophy of profound influence on Martin Luther King Jr. among others). Like his predecessor, Ratzinger has a great interest in Phenomenology and other modern philosophical schools. This led him to be a theological advisor to the Second Vatican Council, at which time Ratzinger was classified as a progressive, perhaps even a liberal.

Ratzinger discusses the role of his office, the Sacred Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (once called The Inquisition), in the development of the 800+ page catechism for the Catholic church. This is a pope who knows the catechism backwards and forwards, for he has been part of the development at every stage.

Most intriguing are his ideas for the future of the church and the state of the world. He doesn't expect some sort of dramatic resurgence of the church, but does see a role and relevance for the church in the world. Perhaps this comes from the power of the church to provoke and be a prophetic witness. Given that his chosen name as pope is Benedict, his comparison in this text with St. Benedict (of monastic fame) is very intriguing. He likens the current and future situation to that of late antiquity, a time in which the majority of the non-ecclesial society wasn't really taking note of what the church was doing - Benedict was a bit of a dropout, who created 'an ark in which the West survived', largely going unnoticed.

For those who see Ratzinger as a knee-jerk traditionalist, perhaps no other statement is more enigmatic than his comment, "Perhaps the time has come to say farewell to the idea of traditionally Catholic cultures."

An intriguing and fascinating read.

Striking Insights from a Modern Catholic Prophet
By Oswald Sobrino
Cardinal Ratzinger is cut from a different cloth than those mediocre prelates who are always eager to accommodate the mistakes of modern Western societies. This book is well worth reading because Ratzinger obviously places proclaiming the truth above his personal popularity. In my opinion, his most striking words have to do with the proper role of the bishop: to keep challenging Christians and others, to, as Augustine said, keep them from falling asleep. Ratzinger finds repulsive the mentality of "don't rock the boat" that seems to permeate too many dioceses. When church historians look back to the latter part of the 20th century, they will rightly note the pivotal role of Ratzinger in preserving the deposit of faith when so many high-ranking clerics and prominent theologians were so eager to compromise that same deposit of faith.

Gentle German Shepherd
By Mark Blackburn
A bumper sticker spotted this week on a mini-van emerging from a parking lot of a Catholic Church:

"I love my German Shepherd!" (beneath it, two words: "Benedict Sixteen.")

I wanted to second that emotion! And it's because of this interview, from ten years ago, which reminds me on its every delightful page, of my all-time favorite such book, from 17 centuries ago (correct) --- one of the treasures of the Eastern Church tradition.

-----

Back in the fourth century a simple monk named John Cassian went to visit the so-called "Desert Fathers" - many of them saints, who performed miracles of spiritual understanding in the presence of Cassian and his friend Germanus. Cassian's young friend was positively hostile in his questioning of these saintly men. But his often rude and gratingly persistent questions elicited the most amazing replies!

Cassian's resulting book "The Conferences" was strong meat devoured by the first "Saint Benedict" -- who used it as the basis for his monastic order (the very first in the western tradition of the Church). A thousand years later, the greatest of the theologians, Thomas Aquinas kept a copy of "The Conferences" with him at all times, and "read from it every day."

I thought of my ancient hero John Cassian (and especially of his rude companion Germanus) while reading this -- my new favorite book! Published in German in 1996, these 280 pages comprise an interview in 1995 of then-Cardinal Ratzinger.

The interviewer, an agnostic journalist Peter Seewald, repeatedly asks often-hostile questions of a truly great and (I believe) saintly mind. I love the fact that Ratzinger specifically requested he not see any of the questions in advance. The resultant conversation is astonishingly brilliant and satisfyingly deep!

Alas . . . it is impossible (for me at least) to recapitulate such brilliant thought in fewer words. But to single out just one exchange that appealed to this former journalist, who like Mr. Seewald has since converted to this 2,000 year old faith - mainly because of such brilliant and saintly minds.

-----

Near the end of this book (p. 215) --- in a chapter titled "2000 years of Christian history and still no redemption"--- the German journalist poses a rambling, 250 word question --- in fact really a dozen questions all bundled together. To which the German cardinal gently begins unraveling the bundle, with the most astonishingly focused reply. He deals with each implied question-in-turn - (and in the same order he received them; I am in awe of such a mind!)

Ratzinger's reply begins with a gentle dig at the questioner's inability to focus on `one-thing-at-a-time - saying:

"That is quite a bundle of observations and questions! The basic question (buried in the middle) is, `Has Christianity really brought salvation, has it brought redemption, or hasn't it actually remained fruitless? Hasn't Christianity perhaps by now lost its power?'

Ratzinger then proceeds to point out a distinction lost on many of us - including his interviewer:

"I think we must first say that salvation - the kind that comes from God - is not quantitative (like) the sum of an addition. In (science and) technical discoveries, there is growth, which may proceed in fits and starts, but is nonetheless continuous: The purely quantitative is measurable - one can ascertain whether there is now `more' or `less.'

"But a quantifiable progress in human goodness is impossible. Because each (of us) is new - and in a sense, history begins anew with every man. It is very important to learn this distinction."

----

Assisting the journalist then (with an endearingly gentle and diplomatic guidance) Ratzinger helps his interviewer re-focus many subsequent questions (which, significantly become ever-more compact).

Eventually Peter Seewald asks a question that helps the reader see in bold relief, the difference between the mind of Ratzinger and that of his predecessor John Paul II (who three times refused to allow Ratzinger to abandon Rome for a more peaceful and secluded retirement in his homeland).

Seewald quotes from "John Paul II's talk to the United Nations" (1995) on the "foundations of a new, world order" -- and his hope for the "third Millennium: `We shall see' said the Pope, `that the tears of this century prepared the ground for a new springtime of the human spirit.' What might be meant by this springtime? A new identity of man?"

Then-Cardinal Ratzinger (ten years away from his own pontificate) replies in a manner that helps us see the principal difference between the world view of the two popes: John Paul II (who philosophically resembles his ideal --Thomas Aquinas) and Benedict Sixteen, (who more closely resembles the original St. Augustine).

Thus, Pope John Paul II (in Ratzinger's words of ten years ago) "does indeed cherish a vision that (the last thousand years of Christianity) - "the `millennium of divisions,' will be followed by the `millennium of unifications.' " The difference is, Ratzinger does NOT see this happening any time soon:

"The emergence of ecumenism at the Second Vatican Council is indeed a sign of a renewed approach to a new unity. It is thus filled with the hope . . . that all the catastrophes of our century, `all its tears,' as the Pope says, will be caught up at the end and turned into a new beginning."

It is good, the future pope said that we have such visions: "This is a vision that inspires and that challenges us to move in this direction. The Pope's untiring activity comes precisely from his visionary power. It would be fatal if we let ourselves be guided by purely negative calculations --- if we didn't allow ourselves to be guided by (such visions) that then give us guidelines and courage for action.

"(However) whether the vision is actually fulfilled is something we must leave entirely in God's hands. At the moment, I do not yet see it approaching."

As a former interviewer, I must add that this interview is quite simply the most amazing (and intellectually pleasurable) that I have ever read.

The Music Room: A Memoir, by Namita Devidayal

When Namita is ten years old, her mother takes her to Kennedy Bridge, a seamy neighborhood in Bombay, home to hookers and dance girls. There, in a cramped one-room apartment lives Dhondutai, the last living disciple of two of the finest Indian classical singers of the twentieth century: the legendary Alladiya Khan and the great songbird Kesarbai Kerkar. Namita begins to learn singing from Dhondutai, at first reluctantly and then, as the years pass, with growing passion. Dhondutai sees in her a second Kesarbai, but does Namita have the dedication to give herself up completely to the discipline like her teacher? Or will there always be too many late nights and cigarettes? And where do love and marriage fit into all of this?
A bestseller in India, where it was a literary sensation, The Music Room is a deeply moving meditation on how traditions and life lessons are passed along generations, on the sacrifices made by women through the ages, and on a largely unknown, but vital aspect of Indian life and culture that will utterly fascinate American readers.

From Publishers Weekly
Devidayal is a reluctant ten-year-old when she shows up for her first lesson in classical Indian singing, but the occasion marks the beginning of her musical lifetime, as chronicled in her new memoir. As a student at an Anglican school in Bombay, Devidayal is more at home speaking English and playing badminton than practicing the tanpura, an Indian stringed instrument. But as she progresses from one-note lessons to real ragas, she begins to realize that her mentor, the much-revered but never-quite-famous Dhondutai Kulkarni, offers life lessons as well as music lessons. Through the many stories Dhondutai relays to Devidayal (which range from factual to mythic), the reader is treated to a detailed history of Hindustani classical music and many intimate anecdotes regarding Dhondutai's own gurus, the legendary Bhurji Khan and Kesarbai Kerkar. Devidayal, who graduated from Princeton and now works as a journalist with the Times of India, was a gifted young singer, but lacked the passion to pursue the art professionally. This graceful memoir is a provocative illustration of music's unifying force in a religiously and socially stratified country. (Feb.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—This highly accessible memoir describes the journey of a 10-year-old girl into the higher reaches of classical Indian music. It also tells the history of this ancient art form and the story of some of its greatest performers. Devidayal has now studied with the same teacher, Dhondutai, for more than 20 years. She succeeds in making her extraordinary story interesting even if the music and her country are unfamiliar to readers. Teens can see from the author's journey as a teenage protégé the rewards of rigorous devotion to something they love. They can also see that they have the right to follow their own dreams even if their parents have laid out a different future for them. As the book concludes in the present day, Devidayal continues to study with Dhondutai, but she is also a Princeton-educated professional journalist. This narrative serves to pass on some of the musical and cultural heritage of India even though the author has chosen to devote her life to writing and not to singing itself.—Will Marston, Berkeley Public Library, CA

From Booklist
Devidayal, a journalist with the Times of India, was 10 when she began private lessons with Dhondutai Kulkarni, a disciple of two of India’s most renowned classical singers. In this layered, fascinating story, Devidayal combines moving personal recollections of her teacher with vivid, imagined scenes from Dhondutai’s life and the lives of her gurus. Woven into the intimate stories is a clear, probing introduction to classical Indian music, including its religious and historical influences and the ancient methods that still shape its instruction. A teen in Bombay during the 1980s, Devidayal speaks with self-deprecating humor and  poignancy about her feelings of dislocation as she moved between the “pseudo English world” of her Anglican school and the “Marathi-speaking music universe,” where she initially felt like a foreigner. As she matures, her guru’s music room becomes a cherished connection to tradition and a counterpoint to her hectic, demanding life in contemporary Mumbai. A rich, well-integrated blend of scholarly analysis, cultural insight, and tender homage, Devidayal’s genre-defying title is a holistic celebration of music’s profound, even divine, rewards. --Gillian Engberg

A many-layered story --
By Salman Habib
The Music Room is several things at once: an informal oral history, a social commentary, even a multi-person biography, if one could call it that. The unifying thread of Indian classical music runs through the book, but somehow unexpectedly lightly -- one wishes that the author would have put more of her own reactions to what she was learning and singing. But this is a trivial complaint; Namita Devidayal's written voice, rational and reflective, unaffected and clear-eyed, yet sympathetic and accepting, succeeds admirably in weaving a tapestry of lives of remarkable people, of a sadly fading musical culture, of the contradictions and strengths of Indian society, and of changing times, all in one remarkable book.

To convey so much in a relatively compact format, The Music Room is organized in snapshots -- yet these flow well in time and space, mirroring in some way the structure and time-cycles of a classical music performance. I even read through the book as if going to a long evening concert -- in two absorbing sittings. This is one of those rare books it is impossible not to whole-heartedly recommend.

The Music Room - A must for every musician and Music Lover
By e.k.
Just finished reading Namita Devidayal's 'The Music Room - a memoir'. It touches the inner core of anyone who traverses the sacred world of classical music! Dhondutai Kulkarni (in mid 80s now), Kesarbai Kerkar, the legendary Ustad Alladiya Khan....they just leap to life in each page, as you process the context of their life and art, and what made them the great pillars of Hindustani music that they are! I liked it, particularly because she doesn't deify these great musicians...she presents them in all their 'humanness' (for want of a better word), their eccentricities, foibles, their goodness, their love and yes, their immense talent... everything!! As the late Pandit Ravi Shankar said about this book.. "A must for every musician and music lover"! Pick up a copy if you can!

A Journey Through Sound
By Amazon Customer
"To play a raga, you must see it standing in front of you." India, to the foreign audience, is often impenetrable and overwhelming. A country of more than one billion people and more than 500 languages, it's not surprising that diving into India is like falling splash in the middle of the ocean, with no land in sight. To understand India, it's always better to view it one facet at a time. Trying to take them all in at once can lead to temporary color-blindness.

So if you want to take India one slice at a time, savor it and digest it fully, start with this book. It details the musical career of Namita Devidayal, from the age of ten when she is first introduced to her mentor, through the rest of her life.

The old adage says 'writing about music is as ridiculous as dancing about architecture'. Not in this book. The book's central character is the music and it grows and matures along with little Namita. The music is at once ephemeral and lucid, a phantom that soaks every page.

To understand India, one must understand a thousand things. One of them is its music. There is no better exploration of Indian music in words than this book.

Concise, clear and readable, an excellent introduction
By Thing with a hook
Lisp is kinda hot again, Perl 6 will have multiple dispatch, Ruby's getting before and after methods, and Aspect Oriented Programming is still bubbling under in Java, so what better time to revisit the Common Lisp Object System and this slim volume from 1989? Unsurprisingly, objects in Lisp are implemented differently to the well-known object systems, even Smalltalk, so if you're into OO (and in particular AOP), check out CLOS.

And this book is an excellent way to get acquainted with the features of CLOS. While the introduction suggests non-Lispniks can benefit from reading this book, I would strongly suggest you can read Lisp to make sure you understand what's going on. It's a quick read (about 220 pages, excluding the appendices), the language is unfussy and clear, and the concepts are simply explained.

The hoary old shape example is used briefly (perhaps it wasn't as tired in 1989), but the two main examples used in the book is a simple locking mechanism for concurrency, and multiple inheritance based disk and tape stream classes. Both example do the job well of highlighting the unique flavour of CLOS. The metaobject protocol is touched upon only briefly, but there's more than enough of the standard object protocol described for you to be getting your money's worth.

Other introductory books do cover CLOS (Practical Common Lisp has a good chapter), but this is a very nice standalone volume devoted to CLOS only. Well worth reading, object (and Lisp) fans.

A good way to understand "why CLOS?"
By Christopher B. Browne
This is a nice "tutorial style" walk through much of the functionality of CLOS.
It doesn't get into examples that are of _spectacular_ complexity, either in size or in difficulty of concept, but that strikes me as being just fine. The dialect of CLOS in use predates the final version that was released, so a few examples require a little modification to work with modern Lisp releases.
If you're looking to get into the sophistication of redefining your own metaobject protocols, the MOP book is surely more suitable. But for most of us who just need to figure out what CLOS is good for, this book provides a very nice presentation of that.

An absolute must have if you're into Common Lisp
By Greg Rivera
Amazing how this book is still so invaluable if you are serious about programming in CL. It teaches you the necessary basics you need when using the CLOS which in my opinion is a very easy way to develop real world stand-alone applications. Mix this with the functional programming features Lisp offers and it makes for very expressive and powerful software. It's funny how this continues to be be such a hidden secret.

A Masterwork of its Genre
By David Southworth
The classic story of American History, as told by Richard Hofstadter, has rightly come to be thought of as a masterpiece of American history since its original publication in 1948. This well deserved reputation comes from the rich storytelling, attention to detail, and thoughtful and complete narrative Hofstadter puts forward in this book.

Hofstadter takes as his guide one figure from each generation starting from the beginning of the Republic, and through biographical sketch describes both the historical figure and the time period he is depicting. Beginning with Jefferson and including people such as Jackson, Lincoln, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Hofstadter demonstrates how a combination of the great men and the times they lived in shaped what have come down to us as the leading tradition in American politics: the belief in American greatness, individualism, and compassion.

The most significant contribution of this book is to show how these men, who have come down to us as legendary and nearly mythological figures were very much political animals. Just like Bill Clinton and George Bush make decisions today based on political calculation, so to do Lincoln and Jefferson. That these men were not demigods but in fact mere humans makes their achievements that much more incredible.

Reason I Got a 5 on my AP Exam
By Amazon Customer
This was the central book to our course for AP United States History. I didn't read the pageant at all ever (despite what the teacher assigned). All I did was read this book and write essays for them.
This along with recycled AP tests that's were used throughout the course as regular tests effectively enabled me to get an A in the course and 5 on the exam with zero, yes 0, studying for the final.
Hofstadter eloquently teaches the underlying causes as to why things happened in history through the use of the U. S. presidents.
Overall, if you're an AP U. S. student, pick up this book, outline it, write a multiple college level essays, forget about studying, and get a 5.

a classic of American history
By David H. MacCallum
This marvelous series of essays on American leaders made Richard Hofstadter's reputation as one of the most important young historians in the country during the late-1940's. Professor Hofstadter took on this assignment at a very early age. He was only 28 years old when he started this book, now a bit of a cult classic in American history, and finished it when he was 32. In spite of his youth, he clearly had fully formed opinions on what drives American politics. Hofstadter throws new lights on American history in a series of twelve finely-drawn portraits, mostly of Presidents but one of a stern moralist, Wendell Phillips, and one of a constantly disappointed Presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan.

In each of these sketches, all masterful in their unique viewpoints and careful analytical approach, Hofstadter sees similarities that quickly bubble to the surface. In all of them, the consistent struggle is that of the conflict between differing views of economic organization. That is the prism through which Hofstadter constructs his view of American political development. In all of this, we are treated to a great ride through our nation's history from an historian who refuses to tell the familiar story but reaches for an understanding of how opinions change over time.

Jefferson, the great Virginia aristocrat, is as clear and eloquent as any of the founders in his defense of the common man, both his rights and his liberties. But of course Jefferson's love of liberty had its clear limits: he was a lifelong slaveowner and almost assuredly the father of one of his slave's children. Andrew Jackson struggles for the common man, dismantling the Bank of the United States, but Hofstadter reminds us that Jackson's early days were spent defending the rights of the propertied class.

John C. Calhoun is presented as the most artful defender of slavery, an institution that had, apart from its heinous and inexcusable human consequences, the effect of sharply reducing the cost of labor in cotton farming, a highly labor-intensive industry. We see the emerging clash between the North and the South as an economic argument. Curiously, Calhoun is also presented as a Unionist but he wanted a special kind of Union, one dominated by the South not the North. Here again, Hofstadter's take on Calhoun presents him in a quite different light than the most portraits of the Great Nullifier.

It is Hofstadter's analysis of Lincoln that most arrests the attention of any student of American history. Hofstadter calls the Emancipation Proclamation not much more than a "bill of lading". It called for emancipation not because slavery was wrong but only that the emancipation of the slaves was required for "military necessity". Only those slaves in the disloyal Southern states were to be freed. Slaves in the loyal Border States were not touched by the Proclamation. His hesitation to fully address the moral wrongness of slavery is based on electoral politics, according to Hofstadter. The most important source of Lincoln's electoral strength was centered in the Midwestern (then referred to as "Northwestern") parts of the country, where voters feared that the institution of slavery, if it spread to other parts of the country, would depress wages and result in more intense competition for jobs. It was not the moral wrongness of slavery that Lincoln initially appealed to but to a more convincing economic argument. Nevertheless, Hofstadter eventually focuses on Lincoln's slow turn to the abolition of slavery in all parts of the country. But we are left with a portrait of Lincoln, probably our greatest president, that is at times frustratingly nuanced.

Hofstadter's discussion of the emerging strand of progressivism in American politics develops slowly. The post-Civil War period was perhaps the most dynamic period of industrial development in the nation's history. Only by the end of the nineteenth century did the voice of the common man find its full volume. William Jennings Bryan was this voice but his career never achieved its full potential. Bryan, three times the nominee of the Democratic party, failed in his most important quest: to change the monetary system of the country from one based on gold to a more accomodating system. Hofstadter's discussion of Bryan is a sad interlude between the magnificence of Lincoln and the emergence of Theodore Roosevelt.

This is perhaps the most puzzling of Hofstadter's portraits. Roosevelt is here presented as a conservative. He opposes bills to raise the salaries of police and civil employees. He guards against the potential violence of labor strikes and urges firing live bullets at striking workers, if necessary. He enters the Presidency with no strong position on the problems caused by corporate power. In fact, as Hofstadter relates, he admits "I have let up in every case where I have had any possible excuse for doing so." One is left with the impression, very much encouraged by Hofstadter, that Teddy was far more noise than substance. This is in stark contrast to recent biographies of Teddy; wanted to read a fuller exposition of Hofstadter's take on Roosevelt, particularly in view of the now widely-celebrated Part Three of Edmund Morgan on Roosevelt, an expansive but ultimately hagiographic study.

The final two portraits (excepting a brief piece on the immensely talented but woefully inept Herbert Hoover) are perhaps the most interesting, since they touch on issues that have emerged in the present decade.
Both Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt had clear conceptions of the use of governmental power to influence events. Wilson turned from a highly successful career as a college president to politics, almost as an afterthought. He came from an intensely conservative background, as did Roosevelt, and brought with him highly conventional views. Hofstadter traces the gradual movement of Wilson, first as a governor and then as President, towards more progressive positions, ones that infuriated business interests. He instituted the income tax, created the Federal Reserve, reduced the tariff (the first significant reduction since the Civil War), and extended control over big business with the Clayton Anti-Trust Act. Resentment against Wilson became white-hot as a result of this. This loss of trust enabled the Republican party to defeat the League of Nations treaty, a world structure that Wilson felt would be his most signal achievement. It ended badly for Wilson and Hofstadter sums it up acutely: "He said that American entrance to the war would be a world calamity, and led the nation in...He said the future... of the world depended on removing the economic causes of war, and did not attempt even to discuss these causes at the Peace Conference." Here it is again: economics rules, according to Hofstadter.

Finally, it is Franklin Roosevelt's turn for the Hofstadter lens. Here, he is at his most critical. Not only does Roosevelt seem to be naïve and practically disinterested in economic policy but he fails miserably in restoring the American economy, lurching from one unsuccessful program to another. Only with the run-up to World War does the American economy respond to governmental intervention. By now, after eleven portraits, each of which offers a different slant on the most prominent American political figures, Hofstadter's reservations about Roosevelt seem predictable and a bit forced. Nevertheless, Hofstadter's overall point is well-served: the American Political Tradition is one of compromise, constant tacking to catch the wind, shifting to capture the mood of the electorate, and growth as broader perspectives become more visible.

In all of this, Hofstadter seems to be saying that important questions are ultimately decided by society's attempt to move towards a middle ground, one where the scales of opinion reach equilibrium. He does this with a series of portraits, each of which illustrate the process of political movement. Not surprisingly, economics has determined most of the important issues of our history. Hofstadter's book is deeply satisfying and constantly interesting. It may not be the easiest read in American history but it is one of the most important.

Old Testament Ethics: A Paradigmatic Approach, by Waldemar Janzen

Using five different Old Testament stories as paradigms for correct ethical behavior, Waldemar Janzen provides a comprehensive way of understanding the ethical message in the Old Testament. The five models of the good life he uses are the holy life (the priestly paradigm), the wise life (the sapiential or wisdom paradigm), the just life (the royal paradigm), the serving and suffering life (the prophetic paradigm), and the familial paradigm. Janzen demonstrates that all five paradigms are linked because the familial paradigm represents the comprehensive end of all Old Testament ethics.

Old Testament Ethics: A Paradigmatic Approach
By Brad Childs
In his book Old Testament Ethics: A Paradigmatic Approach, author Waldemar Janzen attempts to persuade readers of the predominance of story over law as the ethical, and exemplary center to the ethics of the Hebrew Bible. For Janzen, this is demonstrated best by five paradigms consisting of one central and comprehensive paradigm (The Familial Paradigm, grounded in Genesis 13, concerning mainly a framework of: the preservation of life, the possession of land, and the idea of hospitality) and four internal, subordinate paradigms consisting of the Priestly Paradigm (taken from Num. 25), the Wisdom Paradigm (taken from 1Sam. 25), the Royal Paradigm (taken from 1Sam 24), and the Prophetic Paradigm (taken from 1Kings 21). According to Dr. Janzen, taken together, all of these five paradigms present people who are meant to serve as archetypal images and of course, they are eventually shown to identify the person Jesus (Janzen, 1994, 193).
For Waldemar Janzen, far too much emphasis has been put on the predominance of the Law throughout Old Testament study and specifically the study of Old Testament Ethics. The Family Paradigm as Janzen writes, "represents the comprehensive end of all Old Testament Ethics" (Janzen, 1994, 3). For Janzen the Family Paradigm is a model of correct behavior and is not only narrative and demonstrative but also prior to, as well as the basis for, the principles and even the commandments of the Old Testament (Janzen, 1994, 1). For Janzen this narrative approach is said to avoid the propensity towards reductionism that he perceives to be stemming from more command oriented approaches.
Sadly Janzen's narrative and canonical attempt to avoid the attenuation of centrality, which is nothing short of admirable, finds its end as a similar form of reduction. In affirmation, Janzen is correct in his assertion that stories provide even children with adequate information enough to determine instances of right and wrong action. As well, Dr. Janzen should be praised for his attempt to grant "proper weight to the place of the narrative" in opposition to the supremacy of the Law as does the majority (Janzen, 1994, 30). In addition, by grounding his ethic in narrative there is a reverence for the unity of the Old Testament within the canon (Janzen, 1994, 42).
The communal reality of the Old Testament history is also honored by Dr.
Janzen's approach as he continually brings the reader into the importance of the family, and the community within the Old Testament: something that is quickly being lost to the more individualistic and indeed selfish nature of my generations' faith. Perhaps more importantly though Dr. Janzen reminds those who might begin their study of an Old Testament ethic with divine commands, just how closely related the narratives are to the rest of the canon (Janzen, 1994, 79, 89).
The reality nonetheless, is that Waldemar Janzen's book is tragically flawed.
In my view there are five main seats of contention:
1.Story verses Principles
While Janzen's approach seeks to avoid principles and laws, he latter admits that in choosing a "paradigm" there should be a "basic principle [that] remains unchanged, thou details differ." (Janzen, 1994, 26) As such, Dr. Janzen has substituted central biblical commands, such as the Ten Commandments, for the more ambiguous and subjective principles he has extracted from early biblical narratives.
2. The Paradigm Problem
Perhaps more interestingly though is the issue of the paradigms themselves. Without any specifically identified provisos, the reader is left alone to wonder by what criteria these particular stories were chosen and just how the extraction of these stories avoids reduction. It seems only by random selection that these five stories are held up to be examples of morality. What's more, the linking of the four subsidiary stories under the larger heading of the familial paradigm often seems forced at best. The scheme does not seem to develop naturally out of the larger narrative context but is appears artificial.
3. Narrative verses Everything Else
Another major difficulty I had with this approach has to do with the place of narrative. While I do believe one can view the whole canon in terms of a narrative structure I do not believe this is possible while treating all the Old Testament stories as all example stories. If stories are the way ethics are told in the Old Testament, what then becomes the place of the wisdom literature? Are we then left to believe that the stories in the prophets are meant not to be prophetic so much as examples of right and wrong? What's more this concept seems to disagree with the entire Judeo-Christian tradition. After all the first collection of writings has always been called "the Law"; not "The Example Stories". Moreover these narrative paradigms seem to conflict. For example: if we are to believe that each story could fall under the familial heading with hospitality included, how then are we to view Lot's choice to offer up his own daughter (family) to protect his guests (hospitality). It seems rather that there is a major defect in attempting to read each of these stories all under the same genre heading.
4. Law verses Story
The place of story and its predominance over law in this book has also made me very uncomfortable. While I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. Janzen's assessment that the Decalogue is not meant to be all-inclusive when he wrote, "No matter how one stretches the blanket of the Decalogue to cover the large bed of ethics, it is too small", I would also make the same statement as it pertains to narrative (Janzen, 1994, 92). Unfortunately Dr. Janzen does not merely suggest a lack of predominance of the Law but he also declares it to be inferior. On page 65 Janzen writes, "stories operate on an ethically prior or more primary level, whereas laws, even the comprehensively formulated apodictic laws, operate on a secondary or subservient level. This claim may seem particularly open to question when even the Ten Commandments, often regarded as the hard core of the Old Testament ethics, are consigned to that secondary level (Janzen, 1994, 65). Janzen however does in fact consign them to a secondary level and in the process suggests a hierarchical ethic, disunity to the canon, and challenges the authority of the scriptures. (Janzen, 1994, 111; 155) Janzen's claims that "the shape of this life stood before Israel's eyes in the form of a vivid, lifelike inner image, and not as a set of laws", flies in the face of our entire Christian tradition (Janzen, 1994, 96). Ultimately Janzen's suggestion that "the Decalogue's rootedness is in the central values of Israel's familial ideal" insinuates that the Israelites composed the Law as a kind of short-hand for the narratives and denies that the laws were divinely given. (Janzen, 1994, 100)
5. Right and Wrong
Unfalteringly though, the most blatant problem with Janzen's Old testament Ethic is that is isn't an ethic at all. While later scholars might use this framework as the basis for building an Old Testament ethic, this particular book reveals nothing in terms of ethical decision making. Janzen never tells the reader what is right or wrong. Though Dr. Janzen claims these stories as ethical models he never actually reveals the ethic of any given story. Instead the reader is left with only a skeletal view of narratives and the allegation of their primacy.
Unfortunately it is much easier to find the flaws in someone else's work than it is to be original for ones self (especially when it comes to the kind of monumental task that Dr. Janzen has engaged in). Whereas I would certainly stop short of claiming there to be no Old Testament ethic, I am exceedingly reluctant to suggest one. Instead I would rather purport that the Old Testament is not an ethics book but rather a divine revelation. Though the Old Testament and the entire Christian canon might include a number of examples and commands (though not all of these and perhaps even none of these should be seen as all-inclusive or absolute) these example stories only function as a part of the larger picture. Ultimately anyone can suggest an accurate and faultless ethical reality, such as "do only the will of God", the details and the day to day working of such a system though do not come so naturally.

I'm a counselor for elementary kids, and I have better books for bullying. "Oliver Button is a sissy" is very good, "Hands are not for hitting", all of Adolf Moser's Mon-Friday series books are excellent, etc, etc

I loved this story
By Tisha S.
I loved this story and my little son did too. Even though he might be a little to young to understand everything in the book, he smiled and pointed at Billy the Bully.

This is a really good story, especially in today's world where bullying is in the headlines so much. The story reminds me a little of the Grinch that stole Christmas.

This story is great for anyone with kids in grades 1-3.

Lovely Rhyming Book for Kids
By Sarah Lincoln
I look forward to reading this rhyming story to my two daughters. The rhymes are lovely and will help increase their vocabulary.

I particularly like the lessons shared in a light fun way which when applied will help them enjoy their childhood even better and become responsible adults.

It reminds me of the lessons I learnt when I was a child when I read the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes". I enjoyed the story, thought it was hilarious but more importantly I have never forgotten the lesson shared!

If you have young children then you should get this book today!

As a bonus the author provides a detailed list of other quality childrens books available on the Amazon kindle!
